“Give me a few minutes. I just need to get access to that control panel,” Jai said as he whipped out the tablet from his bag. Wearing gloves made it harder to enter commands, and Jai quickly grew impatient as he scanned for local signals. There were several signals, but he quickly discarded the obvious chatter made by the reclamation teams and their machines. He narrowed down the list to a few, all Zona signatures except for an oddball one, which he didn’t have time to think about. He zoomed in on the Zona signals and traced the nearest electronic signature to a ten-meter radius.

Gotcha.

He piggybacked the signal with a trojan he’d developed and waited. His adrenaline was pumping through every cell. This is what he lived for. Several seconds passed, then a green light blinked on his tablet and the door panel’s menu appeared. He duplicated the screen and accessed the administrative settings, which he then had to hack again to access the station’s security network. He was relieved to find that his code from working in Cyber Ops worked without having to run secondary programs. He took control of the security systems, which displayed names of all staff currently badged into the station and the cameras.

Everything took under three minutes.

He grinned and held out the tablet to show them. “We own the security system and can see everyone inside. Looks like there are currently two staff working and only one security guy sitting at the security desk.”

“I thought you were going to open the door,” Wolt said sardonically.

Jai switched to the duplicate screen and tapped an icon. “Open sesame.” The door opened.

“Can you freeze those vid feeds so they don’t see us coming?” Bode asked.

Jai tapped on each of the small vid screen windows. “Done.”

“Good. Let’s go.”

Bode ran them to the entrance and through the doorway. Jai locked the door behind them to prevent other security forces from entering. He studied the feeds on his tablet, then pointed. “Security room is directly up there on the left.”

His captain kept the lead position. Both Dru and Wolt moved with such smooth precision, he could’ve sworn they had a psychic connection. Jai, on the other hand, felt clumsy and his heart raced. He was constantly looking from his tablet to his left and right, expecting troopers to ambush them at any second.

Bode slowed as he approached the security room where the door was open. Without looking back, he held up a fist, and Jai stopped. Jai had never planned on staying in Zona’s security forces, but he’d come to appreciate his Academy training, especially since joining the Diablos. Having military training—and the habit of staying in shape—ensured he didn’t feel like a complete idiot when doing a job with the crew.

Bode crept up to the doorway, stood in silence for a moment, then sprung. Jai had expected to hear a scuffle, but all he’d heard was a brief rush of movement, then nothing. A second later, Bode popped his head out and motioned to them.
